The Somerset & Dorset line, which ran from Bath to Bournmemouth, closed in 1966 and has since been one of the most mourned of Britain's railways. The interest in this line has continued unabated, and yet the story of what happened to the infrastructure after that fateful day in March 1966 has never been told. Many trains ran over sections of the old S&D for several years after its closure as a through route, whilst the trains used for its dismantling are an interesting but little known aspect of the line's long and eventful history. Many stations and structures have survived to the present time, some in an excellent state of preservation, but even now others are lost to demolition from time to time. The history of this famous cross-country route is therefore still on-going and here, for the first time, the story is taken on from the last few weeks of operation up to the present day.
